Two Upcoming New Islay Books

Considering that Islay is a fairly small and remote island with ‘only’ 3,500 permanent residents I'm again and again impressed how many books about Islay or an aspect of Islay are published. Over the last few months I've reviewed The Legend of Laphroaig and Islay - Past and Present. Today I added Sancheas Ìle (review to follow, see also Islay's Gaelic Heritage) to my library. Over the coming months I plan to add at least two more Islay books to my Islay library, once they have been published:

The first one is called Whisky Dream, to be published by Birlinn in June 2008. According to the description it is a book about Mark Reynier and Bruichladdich distillery but also the Ileach (the people, not the newspaper). From what I understand this is not an authorised biography of Mark and the distillery, so it will be interesting to see how good and accurate it will be. I assume it will be available at Roy's Celtic House, obviously from Birlinn directly or you can Preorder Whisky Dream at Amazon.co.uk.

The second book is also going to be published by Birlinn in June 2008 and is called Islay - The Land of the Lordship by Dr David Caldwell. This book is about Dál Riata, the Lordship of the Isles (think Finlaggan) and the Campbell lairds. Again I haven't seen the book yet and don't know how good it will be, but the description sounds very interesting. I assume it also will be available at Roy's Celtic House, obviously from Birlinn directly or you can Preorder Islay - The Land of the Lordship at Amazon.co.uk)

More about Islay books some other time, for now I'm off to bed for a bit of Gaelic (well, more likely English translation) reading before getting a much needed good nights sleep.
