Islay - Jura Ferry Problem

Picture of a small ferry at a big linkspan

While I had hoped to publish the 3rd edition of my printable Islay guide today I had to realise that's not going to happen. I'm not happy with it yet, so it will have to wait for another day or two. Considering that I'm just adding a section about an excursion to Jura to the guide the topic of today's blog entry is quite fitting: The problems with the Jura ferry slip in Port Askaig on the Sound of Islay.

You might be aware of the various problems with the Port Askaig project. The most recent problem is with the slipway for the Jura ferry, as the Herald reports in Safety Concern Over Island Ferry Service.

In short, the slipway has been constructed in a way that makes it unusable for the Eilean Dhiura. It therefore has to use the linkspan instead. This is not always possible (in particular when the Calmac Islay ferry berthes in Port Askaig over night), which in tun has an impact on the ferry services to Jura.

It seems a temporary solution has been found, with The Herald reporting CalMac Offers To Divert Islay Ferry For Jura Access. Obviously not a long term solution, so I suspect we will hear more of this...
