Friday Islay Picture (62)

You might be aware that today/tomorrow we will have the summer solstice. Well, at least in the northern hemisphere, which obviously includes Islay. This year the solstice happens at 23:59 hrs GMT on 20/Jun/2008, which is 00:59 hrs BST on 21/Jun/2008. Unfortunately I won't be on Islay for the longest day of the year this year, but here's how the longest day finished for me last year:

Picture of a dramatic sunset on Islay, colourful clouds in red and yellow with the sun setting behind some low hills

Assuming the clock in my camera was set more or less correct this was somewhere between 22:20 hrs and 22:25 hrs. If you then consider the twilight it didn't actually get fully dark until well after midnight.

We watched the sunset from the dunes at Kilchoman. The sun was setting behind the low hills at Coull Farm (Carn Mòr and Cnoc Mòr), near Saligo. While it wasn't a clear evening the clouds actually created a quite dramatic and colourful sunset. A fitting end to a nice day with an afternoon at Saligo Bay on the west coast of Islay.

I very much doubt I'll get much of a sunset today, it's very cloudy and dull here in Aldermaston Wharf this evening. The forecast for the weekend doesn't look too promising either. Tomorrow I'll pick up my digital video camera from the post office, so I'll probably spend at least part of the weekend starting to learn how to use it. Have a great weekend and solstice, whereever you are and whatever your plans are!
