Ein Bisschen Islay Auf Deutsch
Sorry if the title for this entry doesn't make much sense to you. But thanks to Christina/ Mausi I've just found out that this week is the sixth language week. I seem to have missed it last year, but did participate in 2006. In the spirit of language week I'm going to write a bit about Islay in German again (for those not fluent in German I'll provide a translation at the end):
Heute also ein bisschen über Islay auf Deutsch. Deutsch ist ja eigentlich meine Muttersprache, aber nach inzwischen zusammengerechnet über 10 Jahren in England geht das nicht mehr ganz so flüssig von der Hand wie früher. Es ist in gewissem Sinne inzwischen sogar das 14te Jahr. 1995 bin ich das erste Mal nach England hinübergezogen, zwischendurch noch einmal für 2.5 Jahre in Deutschland gewesen, aber zu der Zeit war ich eigentlich auch nur körperlich in Deutschland, weniger im Geiste. Aber jetzt zum Thema Islay und etwas Deutsches:
Während ich diesen Eintrag schreibe trinke ich ein Saligo Ale von Islay Ales, einer Mikrobrauerei (oder wie immer man so etwas auf Deutsch nennt) auf Islay. Was vielleicht nicht jeder weiss ist daß ein Deutscher Mitbegründer der Brauerei ist. Dieser Mann ist Walter Schobert, in Deutschland vor allem als Whiskykenner und Buchautor bekannt (Lebenslauf, Whisky Biographie). Er besitzt ein Haus auf Islay, wo er inzwischen auch ganzjährig wohnt.
Ich weiss nicht wie stark die Verbindung zu Deutschland heute noch ist, aber eine sehr wichtige und hoch geachtete Person auf Islay hat Deutsche Wurzeln: Baron Bruno Schroder von der Bank Schroders plc. Auf die Schnelle habe ich jetzt keine Artikel auf Deutsch gefunden, aber auf Englisch gibt es ein Bruno Schroder Portrait bei der Times, eine gute Beschreibung seines Wirkens auf Islay gibt es bei This is London und bei der Deutschen Botschaft in London gibt es einen Bericht über eine Ordensverleihung (Bundesverdienstkreuz?) an Baron Schroder und Charmaine von Mallinckrodt, seine Partnerin. Ich vermute Baron Schroder spricht Deutsch, vor ein paar Jahren habe ich einen seiner Verwandten auf einer Wanderung im Dunlossit Estate kennengelernt, dabei haben wir uns auch auf Deutsch unterhalten.
So, damit ist es jetzt erst einmal genug auf Deutsch. Während ich diesen Eintrag zusammengetragen habe spielte keine Deutsche Musik, sondern Amerikanische: R.E.M. - Accelerate.

A bit about Islay in German today. German is my mother tongue, but after a total of more than 10 years in England it isn't flowing as easy as it used to. In a sense it is even the 14th year now. I first moved to England in 1995 and even during the 2.5 years I returned to Germany in between only my body was in Germany, my mind was mainly in the UK. But now back to the topic of Islay and a bit of German:
While writing this entry I'm drinking a Saligo Ale from Islay Ales, a microbrewery on Islay. What may be not everybody knows is that a German is joint founder of the brewery. This man is Walter Schobert, in Germany best known as whisky expert and book author (CV, Whisky biography). He owns a house on Islay, where he now lives permanently.
I don't know how strong the link to Germany still remains today, but a very important and highly respected person on Islay has German roots: Baron Bruno Schroder of the bank Schroders plc. I couldn't find any good articles in German in a quick search, but in English there is a portrait of Bruno Schroder in The Times, a good description of his activities on Islay can be found at This is London and at the German Embassy in London you'll find a report from the award ceremony for the Cross of the Order of Merit to Baron Schroder and Charmaine von Mallinckrodt, his partner. I guess Baron Schroder speaks German, a few years ago I met one of his relatives during a walk at Dunlossit Estate, we also spoke in German for some of the time.
