Islay in Other News

Late Islay blogging today after a very long day at work. Unfortunately not enough time to properly prepare and write the golf news on Islay entry I was hoping to bring you today. Instead some quick news snippets I stumbled over recently with Islay being mentionend in unexpected places or unusual connections.

First the news that Flybe finds destination namesakes. I don't know if this was widely publicised (I only spotted it now), but Flybe set out to find people whose names match or are similar to the destinations they fly to from Glasgow. This obviously includes Islay and they found an Islay McVean in Dunbartonshire. I don't know why they didn't stay closer to home, if I'm not mistaken there are a number of Islay's living on Islay (one of them is listed here).

Second some information how Islay helped to turn the life of Blue Peter presenter/ gardener Chris Collins around. His ‘true real life story’ is told in The Sun with a big credit to Islay:

I then went up to the Isle of Islay in the Hebrides and I lived in a tent on the beach for nine weeks. I dried right out, got it all out my system. I ran around the beach and climbed cliffs. The Scots call it God’s own country and they’re not wrong.

It was a very inspiring period. The locals would give me bowls of soup. I met hermits — it was a mad time. I probably was in pain for a little while, mentally and physically, but that’s not how I remember it.

Lots of praise for Islay there, both for the land and the people. I'm sure many people will agree with him here.

That's all I have for today. Good night!
