Islay Holiday Tours

Islay Links in stencil

Islay is a holiday destination for many people, me included. Visitors come for many reasons activities, the whisky, the bird- and other wildlife, the nature, the beaches, hunting, walking and many more. Many people including me make their own arrangements, book a hotel or a cottage and the ferry and just come over to Islay. Others prefer more organised tours, three of which I've recently come across:

Let me start with Scottish Routes from Edinburgh: I think I first came across them on either on Twitter, where they are active with the Scottish Routes Twitter account or on Bagging Scotland where he blogged about a 4 Day Tour to Islay and a Tailor Made Tour to Feis Ile 2010. From what I've read the participants in their tours seem to really enjoy a personal and flexible approach, so if you're interested the 4 Day Islay Whisky Adventure Tour might be right for you. I assume you can also use one of their Private and Tailor Made Tours for a special visit to Islay.

Naturetrek is from Hampshire in England, as the name suggests they offer wildlife holidays all over the world. One of their tours is their Islay & Jura tour in October. Why in October only? Because that's one of the best times to watch the Barnacle Geese on Islay. I'm afraid that's all I can tell you about them.

Finally something for the photographers: Many people and in particular those interested in photography will be familiar with Colin Prior, the famous Scottish landscape photographer. He is offering the Islay - Queen of the Hebrides trip, also in October. I'm not sure if this is a regularly offered trip or a one-off, I think it might be a one-off, according to the website offered in conjunction with Bowmore distillery. The most expensive of the three tours I'm mentioning here, but then it includes an interesting trip with Islay Sea Safari and some other goodies.

That's all I have for today, I hope those of you considering a guided tour to Islay in some form found these interesting.
