Islay April Sunsets at Machir Bay

Islay on Video written in stencil

To introduce my latest Islay video let me just quote the description I wrote on YouTube: ‘Sunset on Islay are beautiful at any time of the year, but certain times of the year are better in specific locations. I believe April is a good time for sunsets at Machir Bay, as the sun is visible all the way until it sinks into the sea.’ I hope you'll enjoy them:

The video is two sunsets for the price of one, they are two timelapse recordings of a sunset at Machir Bay, seen from the dunes near the Kilchoman Military Cemetery. I shot them on the 10th of April 2010 and the 12th of April 2010, two fantastic (although rather chilly) evenings. Unfortunately the YouTube version of the video for some reason comes out slightly darker than the original, otherwise you could see people moving around on the beach as well as sheep and cows in the dunes much better than you can now. Still, I hope you enjoy the videos and they give you a good impression of what you can see in April.

Kind of related I'd like to point out a very helpful tool for anyone wanting to plan their sunrise, sunset, moonrise or moonset pictures or videos: The Photographer's Ephemeris (About). The two screenshots below illustrate it for Machir Bay (the orange line is the sunset), the left picture is for the 12th of April, the right one for the 26th of July, i.e. today:

In other words, today the sun would disappear behind Carn Mòr before it sets while in April you can see it all the way until it ‘sinks into the sea’. With that thought: Good night!
