Friday Islay Picture #214 - Night Sky over Machir Bay

Friday Islay Picture in stencil

During my latest Islay visit at the end of October last week I was lucky enough to have a new moon in the middle of the week. There were even a few largely clear nights. Good conditions for a few attempts at night sky with the stars photography. This turned out more difficult than I had expected, so only a handful of them I'll ever dare to show here and on the photoblog. More likely on the photoblog, as they work much better in large. After all that finally the first one, stars in the night sky over Machir Bay on the west coast of Islay:

Even in this far too small version you can make out the Milky Way (just right of centre). The line towards the centre of the picture I believe was a plane, in the larger version you can see that it is not a solid lane but interrupted. The glow on the horizon behind the hills I believe is largely due to some light pollution from Port Charlotte and Portnahaven and in particular from the Rhinns of Islay lighthouse (I could see the beam of the light moving across the sky).

Standing out there was definitely another ‘wow moment’ (actually, more likely dozens of them), seeing all those stars and in particular the Milky Way is just stunning.

I hope you'll like the picture, as usual I will post a larger version on the Islay Pictures photoblog on Saturday morning. If you like the version above I think you'll like that even better.
