Friday Islay Picture #246 - Nesting Shag With Eggs

While I've got the funny feeling not too many will see the picture tonight or read the blog in general over the next two (?) weeks (come on, admit it, you're all watching the opening ceremony followed by the rest of the Olympics…) I'm still going to post a Friday Islay picture. Since I started the series this has been one of my favourite topics on the blog. Today something which will hopefully be the start to at least two new lives:

I spotted this Shag on its nest during a walk along the cliffs at Sanaigmore in June 2012. According to my RSPB Handbook of Scottish Birds Shags usually lay a clutch of three eggs, although only two are visible here. The chicks would have hatched by now, depending on how far they were when I took the picture they should be between two and five weeks old now.
That's all I have for tonight, as usual I will post a larger version on the Islay Pictures photoblog on Saturday morning. For those interested, I'm currently having an ‘Islay bird week’ over there, so far with a Gull, a Kestrel (I think), an Oystercatcher, two Razorbills and a Meadow Pipit.
That's really all now, time for some ice cream before I'm off to bed. Good night!
