John Crawfurd, Born On Islay

Islay can boast a number of people who made their luck away from Islay, be it in the UK or around the world. So far I've mentioned John Francis Campbell and George Robertson. Almost by chance I've just found another famous son of Islay:

Recently I wrote about Islay -vs- Singapore. What I didn't know then was that one of the first governors was an Ileach: John Crawfurd was born on Islay in 1783 and in 1823 became governor of Singapore. He also was an author, among others writing a book Journal of an Embassy to the Courts of Siam and Cochin-China.

Found via a blog entry Who Really Found Singapore?, where the author regards him as one of the founders of Singapore.
