Islay Malt Pillage 2007

Reading the latest Ileach I noticed an article about the new skiff ‘ISIS’ having been launched at Port Ellen. It was built by Valkyrie Craft in Ireland in a design called Skerries Yawl. It will be used for a major charity fund raising event, the third of a trilogy:

The Islay Pillage, run by the Lagavulin Fundraisers, collects donations of single malt whisky from all Islay distilleries which is then auctioned for charity. The first pillage took place in 2003, followed by the second pillage in 2005. The third and final pillage is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 30th of June 2007:

Starting in Bowmore very early in the morning (most people will call it the middle of the night) they will row the new skiff to all seven shore based Islay distilleries, then over to Jura where they will finish late in the evening. On the way they will collect a symbolic 1 litre of 14 year old malt whisky from the distilleries while more will be collected by a support vehicle. Once they arrive in Craighouse all the whisky will be joined in one cask to marry. I believe it will then be left for a few month to a year and finally auctioned later this year or early next year.

250 bottles will be auctioned, I'll have a go at getting one. I'll also be on Islay for part of the pillage, it's actually the last day of my summer holiday, I'll be leaving on the Saturday. Time permitting I'll try to take a few pictures at one of the distilleries, depending on the timing I might also be able to take a picture from the ferry.

For a nice report from the 2005 pillage try Dave Broom's tale in WINEmag.co.za. If I hear of any news about the 2007 pillage I'll post an update to this blog.
