Mixed Islay Links and News

Islay News in stencil

Every once in a while I come across a short Islay news item or Islay picture I think some of you might find interesting. Some I post on Twitter, others I bookmark to decide later what to do with them. Today I decided to write a summary post with a few of those Islay related links, I hope you'll find at least one of interest for you:

If you're looking for a temporary job on Islay, know a thing or two about birds and have an outgoing personality the RSPB Islay Reserves and Community Officer position might be of interest for you. Closing date is the 5th of March.

Many of you will have heard of the collision of the Isle of Arran (the ferry, not the island) with the pier in Kennacraig. You can find a few pictures of the damage in the Greenock / Gourock 7 Feb 2010 Flickr set of md93 (Stuart McMahon) (who also has an Islay set from a holiday in July 2009). On the Ileach Newspaper Flickr account are pictures of the damage to the passenger walkway and the damage to the linkspan.

Winter returned to Islay with some snow today, although this great picture of an iced beach by glenfinlas is a bit older. Still looks great. There's also the sad picture of a Barn Owl in distress, good news is that it has made a full recovery under the care of the RSPB.

I thought I would have mentioned it on the blog already (I know I ‘twittered’ it), but looking through the Hogmanay on Jura Video I can't seem to find it: Taking Waves is a very interesting interview with Andy Macdonald of the Islay Energy Trust.

Finally two old pictures I spotted in the Flashback Photos gallery of The Oban Times. The first shows ‘Islay Gaelic pupils at Oban Mod - 1992’. Unfortunately the gallery doesn't have correct ‘permalinks’ to the full page with the picture, but this link will take you to the picture only. The second shows ‘Police join Port Askaig RNLI gala day fun in the mid 1930s’, again here's the direct link to the picture

PS: Now if none of this was of any interest to you and you are of a slightly older generation you might find Anybody Remember? interesting. Nothing Islay related I can think of mentioned there, but may be you want to add to the list?
