Islay Blogging Roundup #122

Islay Blogging Roundup in stencil

Less than a week to go until this year's Islay Festival, three weeks until my next Islay visit and four weeks until this year's Islay Beach Rugby tournament. Must be summer soon, despite the rather wet weather down here in Aldermaston Wharf today. Until then it's time for another Islay blogging roundup, what have the blogs been writing about Islay, Jura and Colonsay this week?

Let me start with Douglas' Sea kayaking with SeaKayakPhoto.com, whose documentation of their Sea kayaking trip round the Mull of Oa, Islay has now come to an end. Some of the final entries were End of an Islay day, What a geo on Oa!, All hail Soldier's Rock, Islay and Threading the Oa of a needle. A very enjoyable read, take your time with them.

Next to a few upcoming visits to Islay: Bagging Scotland writes The Baggin' Waggon is with us! Of course the first place they will visit with it is Islay (possibly followed by Jura?). A few days ago the Oor Alba Blog wrote Today is the day !!! Tha mi agus mo bhean a dol a Alba an-diugh., as they were due to leave for Scotland and ultimately Islay. Unfortunately that didn't happen and the latest entry says they were going to try again this Sunday. Fingers crossed that they make it, in particular as that unpronouncable Icelandic volcano seems to be playing up again.

Quite a few interesting Islay whisky postings this week, here are some of the best ones I spotted:

Oliver Klimek of Whisky Rating has just started a series about the Islay distilleries following a recent visit. So far two of them are online, Islay Distilleries #1 of 8: Bunnahabhain – The Grey Mouse and Islay Distilleries #2 of 8: Bruichladdich – The Maverick. Some good stuff in there!

On the Bruichladdich Blog we learn about a Hole in the Roof (nothing to worry about) while Discover Whisky has a Whisky Dreams - book review (in case you don't know the book, it's about Bruichladdich). The Guid Scotch Drink writes about Bruichladdich's multiple personality disorder after Tasting Bruichladdich.

Ralfy, probably best known for his whisky vid-blog reviews, is also currently on Islay as mentioned in ... Trip to Islay. Also The Jewish Single Malt Whisky Society tastes the Bruichladdich 19yr old Black Arts and Whisky For Everyone tries the Laphroaig 1999 single cask from Royal Mile Whiskies.

From the whisky straight to the bird- and wildlife watching: The Islay Birds blog shows quite some commitment and blogs the latest birdwatching news at 1:15 in the morning. There's also a nice picture of a Wheatear and Ian spotted his first House Martin of the year. John Islay Birder Armitage is away from Islay at the moment.

In other news I've managed to find a Spanish blog entry about the Scottish Ultra 2010. El viaje. There might be more to come, it might be worth watching the entries tagged Scottish Ultra on the blog. A familiar ferry was recently spotted on the Clyde by ClydeSights, the HEBRIDEAN ISLES. And Ann T. Hathaway picks up my Sheepdog trials on Islay video in National Police Week: Part One, The Sheepdog Has Fun.

Ron continues his reports from his Islay holiday, among others with Misty Islay Morning and Currie Sands near Portnahaven.

I know where I’m going… writes Peter Edwards on Writes of Way about a recent visit to Colonsay. He mentions the upcoming Islay, Jura and Colonsay walking book, I hope to order and review it before my holidays.

And one more thing, the pictures: On Mark's Islay Photography Gallery we find The Peat Cutters Dram as he is Getting ready for Feis Ile 2010. Unfortunately there are also two sad pictures, Aftermath of a Heather Burn and Aftermath of a Heather Burn 2. From my own Islay Pictures photoblog my favourites were Footsteps in Machir Bay, Isle of Islay and Rocky Shore with Carraig Fhada Lighthouse.

I think that should be it for tonight. Just the reference to the Scottish Roundup left, but as of writing this week's entry isn't up yet. Good night!
