Improvements at Islay's Port Ellen Maltings
Time to catch up on the post that should have appeared here on Thursday, but didn't because of my computer problems. I'm hoping this will be good news for Islay, in particular the residents and visitors of Port Ellen. While essential for many of Islay's whiskies the smoke from the Port Ellen Maltings has long been a problem for many residents of Port Ellen, in particular those living near the maltings. Fingers crossed some recent works will help to reduce the problem:
In case you didn't spot it, the change is towards the right of the building, the new chimneys. Here's another look from the other side:
The tops of the chimneys are 12 metres above the buildings, hopefully this will help to disperse the smoke much more efficiently and stop it from getting into the houses.
They went up fairly quickly I think, can't remember seeing any sign of them when I was on Islay six weeks ago in June. Fingers crossed they will address the problem or at least reduce it significantly. I guess we'll know over the next couple months, if I'm not mistaken it depends a bit on the weather and a few other factors?
