Islay Gin outsells Islay Whisky
No, that's not a headline I had expected to write. After all Islay is known as the ‘whisky island’ to many people, not surprising keeping in mind the eight working whisky distilleries on the island. But then I spotted an interesting headline today:
Whisky distillery shocked as gin outsells malts - Tipple's a gin-ner
OK, it's in The Scottish Sun (which you shouldn't always believe), but it was confirmed on the Bruichladdich Blog soon after: Botanist Boom. That's the gin in question, The Botanist, released last week and available in the Laddie Shop here. It is selling faster in the Bruichladdich distillery shop than any single malt whisky release they've ever had.
Since its launch on Friday several hundred bottles have been sold, some people buying six bottles in one go. Others fancy it and I'm sure many others will be interested. I haven't come across any reviews since the release yet, as soon as I do I will either post an update or include them in the weekly Islay blogging roundup.
Now don't ask me how it tastes, for the simple reason that I haven't tasted it yet either. I'm not a gin drinker, although have to admit I haven't tasted any yet, at least not that I can remember. I just have the feeling it's not really going to be my taste (not the Bruichladdich gin as such, gin in general). When I'm at Bruichladdich next I'd be more than happy to taste it if I'm offered one, I just can't afford to buy a bottle on the off chance I might like it.

I think I might post another one tomorrow morning. Think I'll ponder that question over a wee dram of their single malt whisky…
