Islay Pictures from the 1960s

Islay Pictures in stencil

Time for a bit of time travel today, almost 50 years to be precise. Some of the pictures have been online for over a year, but in particular over the last few days Rod Lightbody has uploaded a few pictures from Islay in the 1960s to his flickr account:

The easiest way to get to the pictures is to go to all of Rod's pictures tagged ‘islay’ and then look through them. I wonder if anyone knows these Two Local Lads Port Ellen 1964, I guess they must be in their mid fifties now? From my first visits to Islay I remember views not too different of this one of Portnahaven Isle of Islay 1964, if I'm not mistaken I think the ruins have now either been rebuilt or replaced with the new buildings.

I'm also fascinated by two pictures of Port Ellen: While it has changed to an extent I think this view of Port Ellen Bay Isle of Islay 1964 hasn't really changed a lot. Looking the other way from almost the same spot as in MV Lochiel at Port Ellen 1964 has changed quite a lot, in particular with the Port Ellen Maltings now towering over what remains of Port Ellen distillery.

There are also two other Islay related pictures some might find interesting: Locheil at West Loch Tarbert and Loading The Lochiel at West Loch Tarbert.

I hope you'll enjoy these pictures and join me in thanking Rod for making them available.
