Beach Art at Machir Bay, Islay

Picture of the image of a person created from stones in the sand, depicting a football player (Gianfranco Zola)

Is it the landscape? Is the atmosphere? Is it the fresh air? I'm not sure, but I think there might be something in Machir Bay which attracts artists of various types. Beach artists using a variety of materials to be precise. Fiona Dix sent me an e-mail a few days ago after discovering my Islay websites and also included the link to an entry in her own blog after her return from Islay. Reading her entry and looking at her picture I was reminded of Gianfranco Zola. Why him? And what does he have to do with Fiona's visit to Islay?

Fiona is an artist (as you can see on her blog loveFibre) and in her entry ‘back from Islay’ has a few pictures of a beach sculpture in Machir Bay. I remember seeing the sculpture during our visit in June, although I didn't take a picture then. And it wasn't there any more in October. So this is where Zola comes in. Thinking about beach art in Machir Bay I remembered the ‘mosaic’ of the famous footballer I had seen and photographed during a walk around Machir Bay in 2003. It is obviously long gone now, washed away by the high tide and the winter storms. But at least I took the pictures of it back then, preserving it for posterity. It also gave me something to illustrate this entry with.

And yes, I noticed it is a tiny bit naughty. Just before someone points it out in the comments. Still think it's PSFW though.
