The Princess Royal to Visit Islay and Jura

Islay Events written in stencil

This week big events seem to queue up on Islay. Earlier today Kilchoman officially released their first whisky, later in the week the Islay Jazz Festival takes place. On Thursday both Islay and Jura will receive a Royal visit:

I first spotted it on Twitter today and to my surprise even retweeted it: The Princess Royal will visit Islay on the 10th of September to open Port Askaig pier. On the same day she will also visit the Jura Care Centre Group at Kinuachdrachd, Inverlussa, on the Isle of Jura.

The Jura Care Centre was opened last year (picture) and is designed to help older residents to stay on Jura once they require some care. I vaguely remember Mike Richardson mentioning first ideas about this project during a walk on Jura in 2004. I think it's a very important project, allowing people to stay in a familiar environment.

Over the years the look of Port Askaig has changed considerably, I still remember how Port Askaig looked until 2003 from my first visits to Islay. It had already changed before, but the changes in recent years have been much more significant. The project has completely reshaped the landscape, but has also been plagued by cost and time plan overruns and various other problems, which frequently made the news. With the official opening of the pier let's hope at least for once the positive news will shine through and it will be a largely happy day. I believe the weather forecast looks quite promising for a change, that will certainly help for the event…

Update: Ron has a few picture of the Princess Royal on Islay by Mark Unsworth of Islay Studios.
