Islay Blogging Roundup #190

Islay Blogging Roundup in stencil

Looks like winter has arrived at least in Scotland with reports of Scotland hit by sleet and snow. Earlier today I spotted a slight dusting of snow on the webcams near The Rest and be Thankful on the A83 to Islay (view towards Glasgow, view towards Kennacraig). No snow in sight from where I'm writing this, although we had a beautiful Afternoon sky in Aldermaston Wharf. But that's enough of the weather, over to what the blogs had to say about Islay and Jura this week:

Let me start with schools and education on Islay and further around the world today: Ian Stuart from Islay High School continues his report from his journey into the big wide world at Day 1 PIL Global Forum. A ‘new’ website/blog I discovered this week is Comann nam Pàrant Ìle 's Dhiura (Islay and Jura Parents' Organisation), which this week reports of a Nightime walk for Bowmore Primary Gaelic Classes. Somewhere I recently mentioned that I wasn't sure if Keills Primary was blogging, I can now answer that with a Yes, at The Big Room at Keills. This week they write about Magic, mystery and Macbeth and not long ago there was Praise for the Wee Class in the Big Room! The Our Learning Blog of Port Ellen Primary gives us something to listen to with Our First Gaelic Podcast and Numbers to ten in gaelic.

A very interesting blog about sustainable life on an island (a bit further north than Islay and Jura) is Life at the end of the road, which I might have mentioned before. One of the blogger's jobs is on the MV Loch Striven, with which he recently passed Jura on A fair passage :-) on route to her annual refit.

This looks like a great birthday celebration: Jen Turns 30.

Moving on to a wee dram or two of Islay single malt: The end of 2011 is rapidly approaching and Gordon writes about his Best of the Year. All things whisky writes about and tastes The Essence Of Islay – Big Peat while Miss Whisky has A wonderful realisation…Laphroaig is lovely! I have no idea what it is saying but Eläväpullo from Finland (I think) is writing about Bowmore Enigma 12 yo, 40 % and Bruichladdich Octomore 4_167, 62,5 %. ScotchInfo.com has a Review: Laphroaig Quarter Cask while Carolina from Sweden has a Cool Islay (is this available in the UK as well? Does anyone know?). From Switzerland the ardblog reports of tasting Islay whiskies on the Whiskyschiff 2011. Closely related Alan of Living Geography is impressed by The Islay Taste Map.

Rachel looks at Whisky for Girls @ Wild and Magic Islay while Ron writes about Christmas Craft Markets by Made on Islay and Islay Online Christmas Shopping. The Islay Energy Trust has news that Marine Scotland Reports On Offshore Wind Options, which could also impact Islay.

Of course there's birdwatching even at the end of November and start of December on Islay: The Islay Birds has a report from the monthly bird nerds meeting and a variety of bird sightings. There are also memories of Trinidad compared to Islay at the start of the winter. The INHT blog passes 100,000 page views and background as well as pictures of Sea Foam by James Deane. There are also good news about Bird Flight Diverters and more.

The pictures. Rather unusual is Ferry from Emi Lazaron. Mark at Savage Shores has several large format pictures of Islay Distilleries while the INHT blog has some Sleeping geese James Deane in the meantime had More Stormy Days. On his Islaystudios's Blog Mark Unsworth shares his thoughts about the late Gene Nocon and his Image of the week are impressive waves at Saligo. There's also Saligo Bay Surf 2 on his Islay Photography Gallery. From my own Islay Pictures photoblog I think I'll have to go for the October Sun in Machir Bay as it was the 1000th picture I posted on it. I also quite like the Sunset over Loch Gorm and Saligo, Isle of Islay though.

With that I'll close for today, as usual the link to the Scottish Roundup for the bigger picture, this week with Blog roundup: Story-telling in different guises plus a look at Wednesday’s strike.. Good night!
