Merry Christmas with an Islay video from 1967

Islay on Video written in stencil

Merry Christmas and Frohe Weihnachten (sorry, that's as good as it gets, English and German are the only languages I'm confident in. Other languages welcome in the comments, in particular Gaelic). Of course it's Christmas Eve today, earlier this evening I went out to have another look at the ISS passing over Aldermaston Wharf, now followed by a wonderful Christmas present by someone I've probably never met. Today Diana Green uploaded a cine short of a family holiday on Islay in 1967 (!) to YouTube:

What a wonderful video, views of Islay before I was even born (although I think I might have just been a twinkle in the eye of my father). It starts with a journey over the Rest and be Thankful, then we see the MV Lochiel in West Loch Tarbert at the old pier (well before Kennacraig…). The arrival in Port Askaig, not an awful lot has changed there apart from the way the cars get off the ferry. Some nice views of Port Charlotte and Saligo Bay (again not much change). Another view of the Lochiel, this time leaving Port Askaig with Diana's grandparents. The Claggain Bay, a plane landing at the airport, passing ships in the Sound of Islay and more of Port Charlotte before we return to the mainland. They continue to Oban and probably Arrochar. At about 9:45 it looks like a submarine, would that be Loch Long or Gare Loch? At about 9:55 I'm guessing that's the SS Waverley?

Many thanks to Marshall and Dorothy Kay for the filming and Diana Green for uploading to YouTube. A very nice unexpected Christmas present. I'm sure many other people will love it as well.

Sharing and discussing. Opening up the discussion. Have your say:
